NGO Trains Corps Members On Business Skills
Afrigrowth Foundation, a Non-Governmental Oragnisation, has
organised a skills acquisition training for 100 corps members in the FCT.
Speaking on the occasion, Mrs Dayo Keshi, the President of
the foundation, said there was need to sensitise the youth to take up
entrepreneurship to better their lives.
She said the era of white collar jobs were gone and that
youths should explore their own potential for self-employment.
“Over the years, Afrigrowth has engaged in youth mentoring
because we believe everybody is unique.
“We decided to empower youths by this mentoring exercise to
let them know what it takes to succeed in the 21st century.
“In this era, the service year should not be a period of
lousiness; it is a period to brace for the future.’’
Also speaking, Mr Frank Ekpunobi, the National Youth Service
Corps (NYSC) coordinator for FCT, commended Keshi for organising the seminar.
He said the foundation had done a lot to empower youths and
urged the beneficiaries to use the knowledge they had acquired from the seminar
to position themselves in the society.
“In today’s world, ideas rule; you must have innate ideas
and harness them with your creative energy.’’
In a paper entitled, “Career Choice in Nigeria: Perception
versus Reality’’, Amb. Joe Keshi, the Director General, Braced Commission, said
advancement in technology was rendering lots of people jobless.
He said the skill gap in the country was huge, and blamed it
on the over reliance on oil.
According to Keshi, agriculture can provide jobs for about
30 per cent of the unemployed youths in the country.
“There are great opportunities in fish farming, snail
farming and other agro-based products because they have ready markets.
“You can start up any business with very little amount and
grow in it; the money you spend in buying black berry handsets can start a
small business.
“You can also access small loans from financial houses that
are ready to assist once they see that you have a good idea.’’
Mr Obikwelu Bright, a beneficiary, said that the seminar was
an “eye opener” to the realities on ground.
Another beneficiary, Miss Mercy Shinkut, said the seminar
had provided her with a sense of direction.
She commended Afrigrowth for the opportunity given to the
participants.
The training and internship programme were in the areas of
agro-allied business, information communication technology, baking and pastry,
events management and fashion and beauty care.
