NAFDAC Siezes N3m Fake Drinks
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has impounded over 500 cartons of fake and adulterated Chelsea dry gin and Squadron dark rum worth N3 million in Port Harcourt.
The raid was carried out by the Agency in collaboration with Intercontinental Distillers Limited as well as police in Rivers State.
The raid which was carried out at the mile I, III and creek road markets led to the arrest of four persons.
Speaking in an interview with newsmen, NAFDAC Chief Regulatory Officer Miss Mercy Ndukwe said that the raid was as a result of a report from intercontinental distillers of the existence of fake brand of Chelsea dry gin and squndron dark rum in Port Harcourt.
She said that the impounded products have been evacuated to NAFDAC office at the Federal Secretariat, Port Harcourt while those arrested will soon be charged to court.
Miss Ndukwe urged the general public to avoid patronising questionable sources and always buy their products from company’s representative and accredited distributors.
In another development, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in Cross River State has urged youth corps members in NAFDAC/NYSC community Development Service (CDS) group to use their wide outreach to disseminate NAFDAC messages against fake and adulterated drugs.
The Cross Rivers State coordinator of the Agency, Mr. Kayode Fagboye who said this during the inauguration of the CDS group in Calabar urged them to assist the Agency by carrying out public enlightenment campaigns in schools, hospitals, market places and community centres on what to watch out for before buying any regulated products.
He said that such information includes, manufacturers name, batch number, expiry/best before date, NAFDAC registration number and changes in physical characteristics of the product.
The coordinator also urged them to discourage those patronising drug hawkers, while liaising with the Agency to confirm genuine regulated and persons impersonating NAFDAC officials.
He said that NAFDAC recognised that as the highest graduate group in the country youth corps members can use the CDS platform to carryout advocacy in their respective areas of service.
