Jonathan Harps On Youth Education
President Goodluck Jonathan says investment in the education of Nigerian youths is not negotiable hence his administration will continue to invest in the education sector to guarantee better future for the youths in the country.
President Jonathan said this was in the belief that only when the youths are educated that they could assume the position of leadership in future.
Addressing 550 beneficiaries of the educational scholarship by the Bayelsa State Government in Yenagoa, President Jonathan, noted that the government would not abandon its responsibility to develop the Nigerian youths, and attributed the restive nature of most youths to lack of adequate opportunity to pursue their academic careers.
Only about three weeks ago,President Goodluck Jonathan was in Yenagoa to receive the first set of the beneficiaries of a scholarship scheme he initiated when he was the governor of the state.
At the event then,Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State,had promised to sustain the scholarship scheme by raising the secondary school schorlarship from 100 to 250 pupils.
The State Scholarship Board also selected 300 beneficiaries for the post graduate studies for Masters and Doctoral degrees within and outside the country.
At the end of the orientation session for the new set of beneficiaries,President Goodluck Jonathan,commended the present administration for focusing on education to boost the capacity of the people.
The president noted that the policy of catching the brilliant ones from their primary school levels and exposure to quality secondary education system to compete favourably in the society was commendable.
He made it clear that the government would encourage any of the secondary school graduates students who come out in flying colours to further their education, adding that he would personally support the state government to raise funds to be saved in a dedicated accounts to sustain the educational scholarship scheme.
Speaking, Governor Seriake Dickson, who expressed thanks to the president for showing the direction in education charged them to be worthy ambassadors of the state whereever they find themselves.
Governor Dickson, stated that the government would increase the one billion naira approved for the post-graduate scholarship because of interest shown by many Bayelsa children, noting that the selection of all the beneficiaries was purely on merit.
The Commissioner of Education, Chief Salo Adikumo in his speech said the state government was desirous to create new vista of opportunities for the teeming youths of the state through education.
