Cassava Inclusion: Farmers Warn Against Failure
The cassava inclusion policy of the Federal Government may
fail without adequate provision of high yield cassava varieties for farmers, a
farmer has warned.
Dr David Ogunsade, the Southwest Chairman of Cassava Growers
Association of Nigeria, issued the warning recenty in an interview with our
correspondent in Osogbo.
Ogunsade said after the association’s meeting in Osogbo that
less than 30 per cent of the cassava growers in the Southwest zone had the new
varieties.
“We have mobilised and encouraged farmers for massive
production but the problem is the scarcity of the new cassava varieties as we
need not less than 600,000 bundles of the varieties’ stems.
“The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA)
in Ibadan supplied us some stems of the new varieties about four years ago for
multiplication but the farmers encountered glut problem.
“This challenge discouraged majority of the farmers from
planting in the subsequent year and all the stems were wasted.
“We appealed to the Federal Government to come to our aid by
making sure that farmers have enough stems for planting,” he said.
Ogunsade said stems of the improved cassava varieties must
be provided enough for farmers before the end of the planting season.
He said that the availability of the new cassava stems would
make the objective of cassava bread which is being promoted by President
Goodluck Jonathan administration a reality.
He called on the government, as a matter of urgency; to
collaborate with IITA and other multiplication centres across the country to
make the stems available to farmers.
It would be recalled that the Federal Government introduced
a policy which compels bakers to include 10 per cent cassava flour in their
products.
