Delta To Execute 55 Micro Projects In 11 Communities
The Delta State Government says it will implement 55 micro projects in 11 communities in the state within the next four years.
The Commissioner for Economic Planning, Mr Kenneth Opara, said this while speaking with newsmen in Asaba on Saturday.
He said that the projects would be executed under the state’s Community Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy (CEEDS) programme.
Opara said that the benefitting communities were selected from the three senatorial districts of the state but he did not disclose the criteria used for the selection.
He said that Delta North Senatorial District had five benefiting communities, while Delta Central and Delta South Senatorial Districts had three communities respectively.
He added that the communities would own and monitor the projects.
Opara, nonetheless, stressed that the programme was intended to foster rural-urban integration, eliminate utter poverty, while creating and sustaining rural institutions.
He also said that a mass of skilled personnel was expected to be produced in the rural areas by the year 2020.
The commissioner, however, said that an assessment survey was conducted on the benefiting communities to determine their peculiar needs in terms of micro projects.
“In determining the projects, priority was given to agriculture and social amenities, including roads and health centres,’’ he said.
Opara said that apart from selecting communities for the programme, representatives of the communities were also selected to oversee the programme’s implementation.
He also said that his ministry had commenced the training of the communities’ representatives, adding, however, that the training would be conducted in batches.
He said that the training would equip the representatives with the requisite skills and information that would guide them in the course of their assignment.
