‘Nigeria’s Econmic Opportunities, Bright’
Given the situation of trade in Europe and China, a Polish merchant naval captain, Marcin Pyda, says Nigeria and indeed Africa have huge and brighter economic opportunities to rule the world trade in coming years.
Pyda said this at a brief ceremony to mark the berthing of CMA-CGM Africa 3 at the Federal Ocean Terminal, Onne, that the capacity of Nigeria and Africa to rule the world trade is however dependent on the ability of economic managers to harness the trade opportunities available in the country and continent.
The Polish captain who expressed happiness with the volume of trade in Nigeria in particular, said the presentation of a plaque signaled a welcome development for greater economic co-operation.
The plaque which was jointly presented by the West African Container Terminal (WACT) Nigeria Limited and Nigeria Customs Services, The Tide gathered, is a routine exercise to welcome a new ship berthing on Nigerian ports.
Pyda recalled his first trade visit to Onne Port Complex about eight years ago noted a lot has been done to reshape the port even as he stressed the need for government to develop all facilities at the port complex to enable it accommodate more ships and their cargoes.
The Polish captain later conducted Traffic Manager, Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), John Olorunsaye and Deputy Comptroller of Customs, W. J. Multafu on a guided tour of CMA-CGM Africa 3 measuring 228 metres long.
Olorunsaye assured the merchant captain and those interested in doing business in Nigeria of their safety and the determination of the federal government to boost trade between Nigeria and other countries.
The NPA manager also said that the federal government is committed to facilitating ports business through the provision of adequate facilities at the terminals.
The Deputy Comptroller of Customs assured all importers and exporters of the co-operation of customs and other security agencies in ease transactions of the ports. WACT Commercial Manager Innocent Ogbuji, noted that the company has waived storage for customers between N1,500 to N11,500 per day depending on the type of container.
He explained the move was designed to encourage customers patronize WACT considering the backlog of containers at the terminal arising from the subsidy strike in the country.
