Bayelsa Speaker To Take Over If …
The Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Nestor Binabo may act as Governor of the state if the Supreme Court in Abuja terminates the tenure of Governor Timipre Sylva and four other governors.
The Supreme Court has reserved judgment on the tenure elongation suit till Friday this week.
The five states affected by the tenure elongation judgement are PDP states where party primaries have been conducted.
Feelers from Abuja indicated that there is a 50/50 chance of nullifying the subsisting tenure or upholding it.
The Tide gathered that if the tenure elongation is upheld, then Governor Timipre Sylva who had been disqualified by his party would serve out his tenure and handover to the eventual winner in May 2012, but if the pendulum tilts the other way, then the tenure of Gov Sylva and those of the four others may be terminated.
Many believed that the governors have already served more than the constitutionally stipulated four years tenure.
Sources hinted that Bayelsans have lost confidence in the present administration and so need a change.
The Co-ordinator of the People Power Parntership (PPP), a grassroots network, working for Hon Henry Sariake Dickson, the PDP candidate in the state, Prince Crispus Amarabhi, said the people need a change to enable the state move forward.
Amarabhi said if the tenure of the governor is abbreviated, it would be good riddance to bad rubbish.
“What then would be left is for the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Nestor Baribo to prepare himself to act as governor for a month and hand over power to whoever wins in the February 12, 2012 governorship elections,” he said.
