Lecturer Makes Case For Ex-Militants
A lecturer at the Federal College of Education (Technical), Asaba, Delta, Mr. Isaac Esekobo has called on the Federal Government to provide employment to all the former Niger Delta militants currently undergoing various training programmes within and outside the country.
Esekoko told newsmen in Asaba that doing so would justify the huge investments on the amnesty programme.
He said that engaging the ex-militants through gainful employment would bring succuor to them.
He commended the Federal Government for training the former militants but warned that the situation would be worst if they were not gainfully employed.
The lecturer said that the people in the Niger Delta had over the years abandoned their fishing and other agrarian activities because of oil spillage and pollution of their land due to oil exploration.
According to him, the discovery and explorations of oil in the Niger Delta region has brought a lot of hardship on the people by making them redundant.
“The impact on the Niger Delta is that the oil exploration has done worse than good. Pollution is everywhere as a result of oil spill.
“Go to all the part of the Niger Delta you see oil spill, reports of oil spill every day, the fishing, the rivers, and the streams from which the people of the Niger Delta earn their living has been affected.
“And the people are redundant; it has increased poverty, hunger and squalor. The way out is that, special attention, not window dressing, sincere attention, must be given to the Niger Delta region not window dressing.
“The amnesty programme is a right plan in the right direction, we appreciate that, they should do better than that.
“These youths have surrendered their arms, you have given them a vocational training, it must not end, they must be engaged, if they are not engaged all whatever you think you have done will be in vain.”
