Akpabio Wants Minimum Wage Increased To N50,000
Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom on Friday in Abuja called for an increase in the national minimum wage from N18,000 to N50,000.
Our correspondent reports that the minimum wage bill passed by the National Assembly and signed into law by President Godluck Jonathan in March has yet to be implemented.
Akpobio, who made the call while fielding questions from newsmen, however, called for the review of the nation’s revenue formula to enable state governments pay the N18,000 minimum wage.
“I do not even think that the N18,000 is good enough for the Nigerian worker considering the high cost of things and inflation rate in the country.
“So, personally I would have said that if we really want to do the right thing, we should pay the workers N50,000 per month.
“The starting point should be N50,000 per month, considering what is going on in the country today. But how do we get that money is the issue?
“That is why I said there has to be a lot of dialogue and the Federal Government must be ready to sit down with the states to at least negotiate.
“We must have a new revenue formula that will allow more money to go to the local and state governments”, he said.
He frowned at the two-week ultimatum given to the federal and state governments by the NLC to pay the wage or face industrial action.
Akpabio maintained that only the review of the revenue formula in favour of local and state governments would enable them to pay the way.
The governor, however, said that his government had since agreed to pay the N18,000 minimum wage to its workers.
He said his government would use part of its derivation fund to pay the wage.
Akpabio advised the NLC to enter into further negotiations with the state governments to avoid labour unrest in the country.
“I think the labour should not focus on the state governments as to whether they are ready to pay or not. There is no state government that is not willing to pay.
“Personally, what I am saying is that even the N18,000 is not enough for the Nigerian worker.
