ATM Fraud: CBN, CPC Plan Biometric Data Capture
As part of measures to
check the swelling fraud over Automated Teller Machines (ATM), the Central Banking of Nigeria (CBN) and the Consumer Protection Council (CPC) have commenced plans to begin biometric data capture on users.
Dropping the hint with newsmen in Port Harcourt during a consumer parliament for telecom users, assistant Chief Surveillance Enforcement Officer of CPC, Mrs Boladale Adeyinka said the measure would enhance security of data of users.
She said though the Central Bank had the regulatory mandate over banking activities, the CPC was worried over increasing complaints by bank customers over waddling of their accounts by bank fraudsters, who capitalise on the shortcomings on the present ATM machines.
Part of the plan she stated was to move from the ordinary PIN Code to a more secure system similar to the master card whereby the biometric data of users including finger prints would help assessment of account through ATM.
With the biometric data capture, she argued that bank theft would be reduced since the card can only accept the user once the finger prints are identified.
In order to make the new policy workable, she disclosed that both government agencies have firmed agreements and that before the end of the year all ATM cards users would be registered in their different banks”, similar to the SIM Card registration exercise by the network providers”.
Mrs Adeyemi noted that a joint agreement have been reached and soon banks would be communicated of the development.
Commenting on complaints made by telecom users over shortfalls experienced in network service, the CPC Surveillance and Enforcement Officer said the agency has powers to address the plight of customers as well.
She explained that CPC plays mediatory and enforcement by being a body of last resort, if the customer had exhausted all avenues of complaints without results.
The CPC senior official therefore tasked telecom service providers to live up to expectation as consumers have right to enjoy services for money paid.

Rivers State University Introduces SponsorsLink To Address Communication Gap
The Rivers State University (RSU), Nkpolu-Oroworukwo, Port Harcourt, has unveiled a new feature – Student-Sponsor Account, called SponsorsLink as part of its ongoing re-engineering efforts. This innovation is to address the problems of students collecting funds but not paying fees, leaving school but still pretending to be in school and inability of parents, guardians and sponsors to ascertain progress and performance of their children, wards and beneficiaries.
The platform is also designed to strengthen transparency, accountability, and communication between students and their parents, guardians and sponsors.
SponsorsLink is available on the university’s portal (www.rsu.edu.ng) and offers a range of benefits. Sponsors can track academic performance, monitor outstanding fees, make payments, and access detailed student profiles from a single dashboard. This centralized system ensures that sponsors are no longer left in the dark regarding the academic and financial status of their wards.
To utilize SponsorsLink, sponsors need to create an account on the RSU eCampus platform. This involves selecting a sponsorship type, filling out a registration form, and verifying their email address using a confirmation code. Upon successful registration, sponsors pay a one-time onboarding fee based on the number of wards they intend to manage.
Once registered, sponsors can add a ward by searching with the student’s registration number, matriculation number, or full name. After the student approves the request, the sponsor gains access to various features. These include checking results, which requires a result-checking fee, viewing student profiles, and making tuition or related payments directly through the platform.
The introduction of SponsorsLink demonstrates RSU’s commitment to enhance the educational experience of students. This initiative is expected to foster better communication between students, sponsors, and the university, ultimately contributing to the success of RSU students.
