Parents, Students Task FG On ASUU’s Demands
Some parents and un-dergraduates in Lagos have appealed to the Federal Government to meet the demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to forestall further strikes by the union.
The stakeholders made the appeal in separate interviews with newsmen.
The appeal followed a warning by ASUU that it would take action if the National Assembly failed to enact relevant laws for the smooth operation of universities.
The ASUU President, Prof. Ukachukwu Awuzie said recently that the union would also take an action if the Federal Government failed to implement an agreement it entered into with ASUU in 2009.
He said that the National Executive Committee of ASUU had directed state branches of the union to meet and pass a resolution on the issue.
The Tide’s source reports that Awuzia did not specify the type of action ASUU would take.
The President of the Lagos State University Students’ Union, Mr Layiwola Adebayo, urged the National Assembly to urgently enact the required laws.
Adebayo told the source that the ASUU’s demand for the implementation of the 2009 agreement was in order.
“Why should the government be delaying the implementation?
“I do not see why the demand should be dragging this far, considering the fact that the aim is to develop the education sector.
“We students are saying enough is enough; we are totally in support of the demand for the implementation of the said agreement,” he said.
Adebayo said that the government should do its best to avert further strikes by ASUU.
Mrs Ruth Igwe, a parent and civil servant, urged the Federal Government to meet the demand of the union to avoid over-stretching academic sessions.
“The economy is not good, we are only managing to ensure that they go through school so that they can come out and support our efforts.
“If the government allows the strike, it will tell a lot on us,” she said.
A third year student of political science at the University of Lagos, Michael Ibe, told the source that he was fed up with incessant strikes by ASUU.
“We cannot continue to fold our arms and watch anybody joke with our future in the name of not implementing an agreement willfully entered into.

Niger Delta Students Suspend Protest Against NDDC In PH

The Niger Delta Students Union Government, Rivers State Chapter (NIDSUG), has suspended its planned protest against the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) state office in Port Harcourt. The suspension followed an intervention by the state Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju.
The students had planned to protest on Thursday, citing alleged neglect by the NDDC, particularly in welfare and capacity-building programmes for students from the state. However, after the police intervention, the students agreed to participate in a roundtable discussion with the commission to address their concerns.
NIDSUG leader, Comrade Loveday Njoku, expressed dissatisfaction with the commission’s alleged exclusion of students from benefiting from its programmes. He presented a seven-point demand, including the reintroduction of scholarships for undergraduate and postgraduate students. Njoku emphasised that education is crucial for community development and urged the commission to invest in the future leaders of the state.
The students warned that if their demands are not met, they will resume the protest and occupy the state commission office until their demands are addressed. Despite previous attempts to reach out to the commission’s management team, the students claimed their efforts were unsuccessful.
