We’ll Not Increase Prices of Goods -MOMTA Boss
The fear being expressed in certain quarters in the country that the #18,000 minimum wage approved by the Federal Government would led to increase in prices of goods has been described as emotionally wrong and logically faulty.
Chairman, Mile One Market Traders Association (MOMTA), Rumuwoji Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Chief Georgewill who made the assertion in an exclusive interview with The Tide in Port Harcourt on Wednesday said that wage increase was long over due inview of the harsh economic situation in the country.
Chief Georgewill emphatically told The Tide that traders in Port Harcourt particularly mile one market in Diobu Metropolis of the State capital have no plan to increase price of essential commodities following the new minimum wage.
Rather, he explained that the benefit of the new minimum wage would be enjoyed by the traders through large scale of turn –over scale because the buying capacity of workers would be improved as a result of the wage increase in the country.
Dismissing the fear of price rise of goods in the market, Chief Georgewill assured the people of Rivers State and residents of Port Harcourt in particular that his association would put measure in place to ensure that workers were not exploited by any trader in mile one market because of the wage increase.
On his reaction over the Federal government gesture, the traders boss pointed out that the approveald of wage increase by the present administration has further testified president Goodluck Jonathan’s determination to develop human and infrastructure in the country.
Chief Georgewill who used the opportunity to canvass for massive votes for president Jonathan ahead of the 2011 presidential election told workers not to mortgage their votes for money if they desire good welfare package and fight against corruption in the country.
Similarly, the MOMTA boss lauded Rivers State Governor, Rt Hon Chibiuke Rotimi Amaechi for being the first Governor in the 36 States of the Federation to accept to pay the new minimum wage without negotiation with Nigeria Labour Congress. Although he acknowledged that the State is in a better position to take the lead in such obligation but criticised late payment of workers salaries in Rivers State in recent times.
He advised the State Government to evolve strategies aimed at ensuring that workers in Rivers State receive salaries on or before 26th of every month insisting that Government should not spare any accountant who would sabotage the policy in the State.
