Bayelsa NUT Accuses Govt Of Indifference
The Bayelsa State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, (NUT) has accused the State Government of insensitivity to the plight of its members.
The Union, then warned against being pushed into another round of crisis, over non implementation of 2009/2010 annual salary increment for teachers at the Basic/Junior Secondary schools, as well as non payment of debt owed the West Africa Examination Council, (WAEC).
Currently, the results of over 8,000 students that sat for the last Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination in the state are withheld by the Council over non remittance of their examination fees.
Disturbed by this development, the Bayelsa state chapter of NUT, has called on the government to expedite action on the implementation of the various policies of UNESCO as it affects the state and also pay outstanding arrears to affected teachers.
He lamented the non implementation of the state Educational policy, non conduction of 2010 First School Leaving Certificate and Junior Secondary School Examinations, and non compliance with the UNESCO recommendation to allocate 26 per cent of the State’s Annual Budget to education.
Describing it as “a cog in the wheel of educational development in the state, the Chairman called for implementation of 2009 and 2010 annual increments for Primary School Teachers, as well as offsetting the bill owed the West Africa Examinations Council.
The NUT boss, who called on the State Government to treat the genuine demands of teachers seriously, said “it is most disgusting that the government has not been opening her doors to enable the NUT dialogue with her, with a view to addressing the above teething problems. This situation is unfortunate.”
Responding, the State Governor, stressed the needs for training and retraining of teachers in the state, noting that the profession was cardinal to development.
“Our recovery as a nation can never come from any other sector, but the educational sector, because it is the foundation for our all round development as a people and a nation”, he said.
Stressing the needs for on-the-job-training, the governor said “if you are a teacher and up till now you have not gone for retraining, then your qualification as a teacher has expired”.
He stressed that his government will continue to provide the platform for the development of the capacity of every teacher in the state.

NDDC Begins N50,000 Monthly Payment To 10,000 N’Delta Youths

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has begun the payment of N50,000 monthly stipends to 10,000 indigenous youths from the Niger Delta under its Youths Internship Scheme.
The Director of Corporate Affairs at the NDDC, Mrs Seledi Thompson-Wakama, disclosed this to journalists in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, yesterday.
She explained that the beneficiaries would undergo practical, hands-on training across the various organisations for 12 months to develop critical skills.
Recall that during the inauguration of the scheme on July 31, 2024, Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, had announced the Federal Government’s approval of a N50,000 monthly stipend for the trainees.
According to Thompson-Wakama, the commission has successfully completed the selection process and has begun placing trainees in organisations to gain practical experience.
“Consequently, with the completion of these phases, the payment of the monthly stipends has also commenced,” she announced.
She revealed that the 10,000 beneficiaries were transparently selected from over 3.2 million youths who registered for the empowerment programme.
“This unprecedented response highlights the immense potential and aspirations of our youths to improve themselves.
“NDDC remains steadfast in ensuring this life-changing opportunity reaches the most deserving candidates, creating a lasting impact and paving the way for a brighter future,” she stated.
Thompson-Wakama explained that the scheme had enabled the commission to collate essential data, including the qualifications, skills, interests, needs, and employment status of the youths in the region.
The data, she explained, would guide the commission in designing programmes tailored to address the unique challenges faced by young people.
She disclosed that the NDDC partnered with KPMG, a global audit and consultancy firm, to enhance the commission’s corporate governance framework.
“KPMG has produced a Governance Advisory Report that will serve as a tool to support the commission’s transition from a transaction-based to a transformation-focussed policy,” Thompson-Wakama added.
The director commended the youths for their patience and cooperation during the selection process for the scheme.
