LG Council Clamps Down On Illegal Revenue Task Force

The Obio/Akpor Local Government Council says it has taken decisive steps against illegal revenue task force in the area, particularly those that block roads to impound vehicles.
The council has also taken drastic actions towards dismantling all illegal dump sites which were being used for criminal activities in the area.
Chairman of the Council, Barr George Ariolu, who disclosed this at the weekend in Port Harcourt, during an interaction with journalists, said that the presence of illegal task force was giving the council a bad name.
According to him, any time the issue of taskforce is being mentioned, the first place that comes to people’s minds is Obio/Akpor Local Government.
He said this is a negative image that must be corrected.
“Any time people come across any group of people mounting road blocks to impound vehicles or collect money from people in the name of revenue within the area, they will conclude that they are from Obio/Akpor council.
“Just on Friday, while going to the office, very close to the council, I saw a group by the road, and they impounded a bus, and the way they rough-handled the driver just upset me.
“I had to come down from my car, and I asked them who they were working for, and they said they are from the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), and I asked my security to arrest them immediately.
“My policy is that I will not see anything going wrong and keep quiet. I will let the security operatives do their job, and let the law take its course. And since I arrested them, nobody from the NURTW has come to ask for their release, and I have not received any call from any organisation concerning them.
“This has clearly shown that some group of people can just come up and claim one thing or the other just to carry out an illegal job, and it will no longer be business as usual in this area”, Ariolu vowed.
The council boss insisted that the council did not have any revenue task force as at the moment, and do not have the intention to constitute one now, assuring that the council will follow the due process of the law in anything it does.
