NAFDAC Okays Astrazeneca Vaccine For Use

The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has approved Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine for use in the country.

The NAFDAC Director General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, disclosed this at a live briefing, yesterday.

Adeyeye said the agency got the dossier of the vaccine a week ago and the NAFDAC safety committee immediately commenced evaluation of its safety and efficacy for Nigerians.

According to the DG, the vaccine can be stored at 2 – 8- degree centigrade.

Adeyeye said the evaluation on AstraZeneca showed that the vaccine is effective against the UK variant which has been reported in Nigeria, adding that the South African variant has not been reported in the country.

She said there are three additional vaccines undergoing clinical evaluation while over 30 herbal medicines are undergoing review for listing.

The Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine was recently approved for emergency use by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The vaccine, which is developed by Oxford University and AstraZeneca proved to be 80 per cent effective against Covid-19.

But recent reports suggested that the vaccine was not as effective on the South African variant.

Speaker Urges Peaceful Co-Existence In Nasarawa

The Speaker of Nasarawa House of Assembly, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi, has urged communities in the state to embrace unity and peaceful coexistence for development to thrive in the area.
Abdullahi made the call yesterday when he hosted different groups in Umaisha, Toto Local Government Area of the state.
The state’s third citizen said that the importance of unity and peaceful coexistence to the development of the country could not be overemphasised.
He described peace as the necessary requirement for development of every society.
“ Peace is priceless and non negotiable as well as key to societal development.
“Let us continue to live in unity, embrace peace and tolerate one another for development to thrive,” he said.
The speaker appreciated them for the visit and assured of his continued commitment to key into positive policies and programmes that would have direct bearing on the lives of the people of the area and the state at large.
According to him, Gov. Abdullahi Sule remains an upright leader with the fear of God and passion for the people of the state, especially with his security efforts and investment drive.
“The governor is up and doing in developing the state,” the speaker said.
He called on the people of the area and the state at large to give their maximum support to Sule’s administration to succeed beyond 2023.
Earlier, member representing Toto/ Gadabuke constituency in the state legislature, Mr Usman Shafa, while leading the village head and community members of Shafan Kwatto, assured the speaker of their total support and loyalty.

POS Operator Docked For Allegedly Concealing N2.7m

A 36-year-old Point Of Sale (POS) operator, Badamasi Usman, yesterday appeared in a Magistrates’ Court Dutse, Abuja, for allegedly concealing stolen N2.7 million.
The police charged Usman with joint act and assisting in concealment of stolen property.
The Prosecution Counsel, Babajide Olanipekun told the court that the defendant offered his POS company account domiciled at Access Bank for the transfer of N2.7 million from the account of one Monday Chukwu to his company account.
Olanipekun alleged that the defendant fraudulently committed the offence with others, who are at large between Dec. 23, 2020 to Jan.1.
The prosecution counsel said the offence contravened the provisions of sections 79 and 319 of the Penal Code.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty.
The defence counsel, Gambo Magaji prayed the court to grant his client bail in the most liberal terms, citing Section 162 and 158 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA).
The prosecution counsel however opposed the bail, drawing the attention of the court to the prevalence of the offence in the society and urged the court to exercise its discretion judiciously.
Magistrate Ubangari Ahmad admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N600, 000 with two reasonable sureties in like sum.
Ahmad ordered that the addresses of the sureties must be verified by the prosecution counsel.
He adjourned the case until September 2 for hearing.

Enugu Youths Hail Ugwuanyi’s Governance Style

Youths of Enugu State have expressed gratitude to Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for galvanizing them to get involved in governance.
The youth also applauded the governor for his administration’s youth-friendly policies and programmes in the state which have brought the young ones together to chart a new course for their future.
Speaking during the unveiling of a book on “Power Shift”, held at The Base Landmark, Enugu, the author, Nonso Nnamani, stressed that Gov. Ugwuanyi has helped them to get involved in governance.
Nnamani, who is passionate about good governance, with wealth of political wisdom, explained that “the Power Shift we are talking about is not just power shift to the people; we are also advocating that people should get involved to see that governments at all levels succeed”.
He pointed out that when people are involved in politics, their actions and inactions would go a long way in shaping the future of Nigeria.
“So this conversation is that we shouldn’t just leave the responsibility of governance to people in power alone, there is what we can do, we can get involved in security; we can get involved in human development; we can become active participants in politics. That is what this conversation, Power Shift, is all about.
“We are grateful for your (Ugwuanyi’s) involvement in bringing people together and helping us to get involved in governance”, Nnamani said.
Also present at the event were the member representing Ezeagu Constituency, Hon. Chima Obieze, the Governor’s Special Assistant on Students’ Affairs, Comrade Chidi Ilogebe, and his Youth Affairs counterpart, Hon. Johnpaul Anih, among others.
In another development, many people have been reportedly killed while others were seriously wounded when some yet to be indentified hoodlums attacked Opanda village in Limbo Community in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State at the early hours of last Monday.
It was gathered that the unidentified persons used machetes to inflict different degrees of injuries on many people in the village, a development that allegedly led to the death of some of the victims.
Reliable Sources further disclosed that the villagers were still searching the bushes for more victims of the attack on Monday morning.
The Tide also learnt that about eight persons who were in critical condition have been taken to Enugu the state capital for medical attention.
