In a bid to curb cultism in Nigeria, particularly in Rivers State, sports enthusiast in the State, a Tonye Harry, has called on the state government to organise different sporting competitions to divert the attention of youth from social vices.
He stated that if sports tournaments are organised in the state, it will drastically reduce cult activities and other social vices.
Harry made the call last Friday at the boxing gym at Niger/ Bende Street in Old Port Harcourt township, during Inter-Club Boxing Championship in the State.
According to him, there are a lot of talents over there begging for help.
“Our country does not encourage sportsmen and women. I can describe the country as a destiny killer.
What I saw today was wonderful,” Harry said.
He noted that the two amateur boxers are talented, if given the opportunity they will perform well.
He used the forum to appeal to government to provide stipends for young sportsmen and women, especially when there is a tournament to encourage them.
