Drivers Lament Robbery Attacks On PH-Calabar Route

Drivers plying Port Harcourt-Calabar route, along the East/West Road have cried out for help over incessant armed robbery attack by men of the underworld along the highway.
A private motor park manager, Obi Park, Mr Chijioke Peter, who spoke to our correspondent noted that Emohua-Elele Alimini axis of the East/West Road was becoming terrifying to drivers and commuters, due to high rate of robbery and kidnapping thereby putting the lives of the road users in danger.
He called on government to beef up security along the route, as well as rehabilitate the bad spots of the road which the robbers use as flashpoint for operation.
Peter also frowned at the rate of Police extortion from the drivers on the highway, even when drivers present the necessary motor particulars.
Also descrying the rate of attacks on the road, a bus driver with Transport Favour, a transport company at the Waterlines, Mr Edet Etim William, said that drivers and passengers’ lives were in danger as the robbers operate without pity or fear of law enforcement agents.
The driver who piles Port Harcourt – Calabar route noted that armed robbers operated in-between two police checkpoints between the banana plantation at Sogho town in Tai Local Government Area and Opuoko town, in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State.
He accused the police of duty neglect, saying the policemen at the checkpoints were more interested in collecting N100 toll each from drivers than securing and saving the lives of road users.
He, however commended Akwa Ibom State Government for putting security apparatus in place along Etim Ekpo – Abak route, saying that the company has now resorted to only daytime operation due to incessant robbery attack.
