A building expert and Vice President, Nigerian Institute of Builders (NIOB), Mr Kunle Awobodu, has charged investors in the constructions industry to engage only building experts to execute construction jobs.
Awobodu gave the charge from the sidelines at a professional converge put together by the NIOB, in Port Harcourt.
He noted that engaging builders in the execution of construction projects is beneficial not only to the investor, but to the generality of the populace.
According to him,’’ No investor in building would want to suffer losses through the introduction of quacks, so it is for the overall interest of the clients’’.
He explained that in the event of a building collapse, the occupants who might not necessarily be the owners would be affected, saying, ‘’it is the collective responsibility among professionals to ensure that construction jobs are given only to the trained who have deep knowledge of the construction process’’
.He explained that NIOB has been persistent in its advocacy to ensure that, ‘’laws and regulations in the “area of construction become effective,’’ so as to check the activities of quacks in the industry.
The NIOB Vice President stressed that, “government should not see any construction project or contract as a means of enriching themselves before a politician is given a building project, evidence of having a qualified builder to manage the construction process should be submited so that a builder would be held responsible if something goes wrong’’.
He lamented that oftentimes when a project is to be executed in the construction areas, only the benefits of the investments are considered without taking the intergrity of the structure into consideration, adding,’’a builder is more or less like a mechical doctor that is in charge of a complex surgery, that if the patient dies it would dent your reputation’’.
