Police Trail Fraudsters, Abia Wonder Bank Operators

The Abia State police command has inaugurated a panel to investigate alleged widespread cases of fraud, operation of illegal cooperative societies and financial institutions in the state.
A statement last Saturday by the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Chris Ezike stated that the panel would be headed by an assistant commissioner of police, intelligence operatives and financial experts in the command.
The CP directed that the panel should relocate to Aba, the state’s commercial centre, where victims of the operators reside.
Ezike stated that the panel was set up after the command received several complaints from Abia residents at police stations in the state in the last two weeks.
He said the complaints revealed that the suspects, masquerading as co-operatives societies, church empowerment groups, women poverty alleviation units and wonder financial institutions, had fleeced many of their money running into millions of naira.
The statement indicated, “The tension, bitterness and acrimony this situation has created can degenerate into a social upheaval if not urgently tackled. All persons affected by the unfortunate development are advised to be calm and report to the panel at the Central Police Station, Aba, for further necessary action.’’
