Rivers State Commissioner for Sports, Hon. Boma Iyaye has said that the government will support the state tennis association to achieve its objectives.
He commended members of the association, most especially the chairman, Chief Ikenna Okafor over his pragmatic approach towards the development of tennis in the state.
Hon. Iyaye said this last Saturday, at the finals of a tennis tournament organised by the State tennis Association, at Number Five field, Old Port Harcourt, saying that government knew the capacity of the chairman.
The tennis tournament was the finals of Rivers East Senatorial District Catch Them Young Clinic Tournament, organised by Rivers State Tennis Association with the view to discover talents at the grassroots.
” I commend the tennis association for making tennis to be popular. The state government knew that the chairman of the association, chief Ikenna Okafor will perform creditably, besides, when you put square peg in a square hole this is what you will see,” Hon Iyaye said.
Speaking, the Chairman of tennis association in the state, Chief Ikenna Okafor, assured Rivers people that tennis will be played in every local government area.
He further restated the association’s commitment to promote and develop tennis at the grassroots level.
” For tennis to grow, I have posted one of the coaches to be at the Number Five field to groom young players,” Chief Okafor said.
He equally said that the association will ensure that the young players combine education with tennis, saying that without education they will go no where.
