Court Remands Man Over Defilement

A Port Harcourt Chief Magistrate Court has remanded in prison custody one Mr. Egbuka Obiechebe 21, for unlawfully having carnal knowledge of a 5-year-old girl.
Mr. Obiechebe, who resides at Rumuosi by MTN road in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State was accused of having unlawful carnal knowledge of the aforesaid.
He is being tried on a two-count charge of willfully and unlawfully having carnal knowledge of a girl of five years which is a punishable offence under section 218 of the criminal code “C38” Vol II laws of Rivers State of Nigeria.
He was also accused of unlawfully and indecently assaulting the girl which is also a punishable offence under section 360 of the criminal code cap “C38” Vol II laws of Rivers State of Nigeria. 2004.
The Tide gathered that the accused was a cousin to the victim who lived with the victim and her father.
The Tide also gathered that the mother of the victim had separated with the father due over incompatibility.
It was also gathered that the accused took advantage of the little girl in course of taking care of her in absence of her both parents.
The presiding Magistrate, Barr. F.N. Amanze, however, remanded the accused in custody and referred the case to the Director of Public Prosecution for his advice.
The case was however, adjourned to the 27th day of September.
