Some Port Harcourt-based legal practitioners have adduced reasons for the spate of divorce among young people in the society.
A respondent, Mr Ayibakepriye Frank who spoke with The Tide in Port Harcourt recently, mentioned reasons responsible for the spate of divorce in the society.
According to him, some couples don’t conform to the same religious belief, some are not emotionally compatible, while some are extravagant.
He said that if these issues could be settled in our society marriages would subsist in the society.
Also speaking, Mr Chimenem Churchhill explained that the spate of divorce in the society was as a result of lack of understanding.
According to him, young people in recent times key towards wedding which is a day’s event than preparing for marriage which is for a life time.
He went ahead to say that Nigerian legal system had provided a room for reconciliation by advising couples to refer matters concerning their marriages to their pastors if they are of the same faith because most couples are joined by the church or refer to people (elders) who are dear to them in the family before filing for divorce.
He further urged churches, pastors to always orientate their members on marriage issues, organising seminars for young and intending couples and also encourage them to pray before going into marriage or in their marriages.
