Union Wants Recall Of Sacked Workers

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) wants workers of an oil firm recently sacked, to be recalled to duty or face industrial action by the union.
The union’s Chairman, Lagos Zone, Comrade Abel Agarin, gave the directive while addressing pressmen in Lagos on Wednesday on the face-off between the Union and Management of Neconde Energy Limited, based in Lagos.
Agarin  explained that the management of Neconde Energy Limited reneged on an agreement reached with the union that nobody will be victimised on the ground of participation in an industrial action.
He stated that members of the union working with the company embarked on industrial action and barely two weeks after the suspension of the industrial action embarked upon by PENGASSAN, members working with the Energy Company over anti-Labour practices and recalcitrance of the company’s management towards the plight of the workers, the company sacked workers that participated in the industrial action.
The union describes the action as a flagrant violation of the terms and tenets of an agreement signed by the union and the company’s management towards the suspension of the picketing of the company by the union members.
The PENGASSAN boss alleged that the company has resolved to continually harass and victimise the union members particularly those union members who actively participated in the industrial action of picketing the company.
Agarin added that the union will vehemently resist any termination exercise targeted at the union members, stressing that such action will be considered unlawful and in principle not in line with equity, good conscience, good industrial relations and extant labour laws.
He said that the Union’s ultimatum must be complied with by the management of the Energy Company and recall its sacked workers to ensure good harmonious working relations between the union members and the company management in all the company bases in Lagos and Warri.
