The Independent Na
tional Electoral Commission (INEC) Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Rivers State, Elder Aniedi Ikoiwak says only the national headquarters of the commission can give a new date for the conclusion of the suspended legislative elections in the state.
Ikoiwak who stated this in a telephone interview with The Tide, on Wednesday, said the commission in the state was awaiting further directives from the national headquarters on the matter.
The REC said the state INEC cannot do anything if directives did not come from the headquarters, adding that the commission was working on how to conclude all pending polls in the country.
According to him, “during the August meeting with stakeholders, the commission said it was working towards slating the suspended polls for the middle of October, but since then no directive has been given”.
“We are still waiting for the headquarters to announce the date of the elections. If that is done, everybody would be aware “, he said.
Ikoiwak noted that elections were not fixed by mouth but by date, assuring that INEC will soon come up with a date.
