‘NIMASA Records 9.7million mts Cargo In Three Years’

ern zone of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Mr. Anthony Ogadi has disclosed that the zone recorded 9.7 million metric tones of cargo from international vessels with a corresponding cargo out within 2013 till date.
Ogadi, who made this known in an address at a NIMASA management and stakeholders interactive forum held in Port Harcourt on Wednesday said the zone also recorded 2013 million metric tones of dry and wet cargoes respectively, adding that about 300,000 units of containers were handled at the ports in the Eastern zone during the period.
According to him, the zone in the cabotgate trade articulated about 1,800 Cabotage vessels, of which 638 are in the major trading, and about 12,329 Nigerian Seafarers on board, which represents about 63 per cent of the total seafarers on board these vessels.
He also noted that the zone recorded 140 boats built locally as against, 1,304 that were foreign built, reiterating that it is therefore empirical that the Eastern zone is the hub of maritime activities in Nigeria.
The co-ordinator hinted that the zone which cuts across four strategic states in the south-south Geo-political zone of Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River and Akwa Ibom States are the intadel of hydrocarbon and their peculiarities in the exploration of oil and gas boosts international and local maritime trade.
The NIMASA zonal boss also disclosed that the zone which comprises three conventional ports of Port Harcourt, Port Onne and Calabar also has 15-offshore crude oil loading terminals, adding that among them were about so other terminals and Jetties complimenting Labour and stevedoring operations in the zone.
According to him, these Ports terminals and jetties handled containerized Cargoes, heterogenous break bult Cargoes, homogenous bulk dry and wet Cargoes, Crude oil, liquefied natural gas and derivatives.
He, however, commended the stakeholders that have been able to hold sway despite all odds in the spheres of maritime infrastructure and superstructure development, human capacity development and empowerment, maritime environment protection and security.
Dignitaries from the maritime industry attended the forum including the Director General of NIMASA, Dr. Dakuku Peterside.
