‘High Cost Of Cassava, A Blessing’

The Chairman of
Cassava Growers Association of Nigeria (CGAN), Abua/Odual branch, Mr Ibifubo Benneth, has described the high cost of cassava products as a blessing in disguise to its members.
Benneth who stated this while speaking to The Tide in an exclusive interview on Monday in Abua Central said the high cost of garri has made the incidence of cassava glut a thing of the past.
According to him, in the past, large cassava farmers faced the challenge of selling off their products especially when harvest was bountiful.
“I remember losing a large quantity of cassava due to lack of buyers in the past.
“This was because at that time, the supply of cassava was more than the demand”, he said.
The CGA boss, however, expressed worry at the high cost of garri even as he said the masses were the worst hit for the ugly development.
He, however, called members of the union to liaise with the relevant government agricultural agencies with a view to adding value to cassava.
He explained that this would enable cassava farmers earn more money as well as create employment opportunities in their various localities.
Benneth who is a large scale cassava farmer further called on the government to frequently liaise with relevant research institutes in order to come up with improved cassava stems for farmers across the state.
