Negotiating Public Service Council, Rivers State chapter has called on the Federal Government to proffer better economic strategies to the nation’s economy currently in a state of recession.
Speaking to The Tide in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, the state chairman of the council, Comrade Chukwu Emecheta, said that Nigerians are passing through difficult economic period and therefore government needs to address the state of the economy with better economic team managers Emecheta said that the working class are daily becoming poorer in a country considered to be a giant of Africa, stressing that government needs to diversify the economy from the dependence on oil.
He said that the situation has greatly affected workers that on daily basis hundreds of workers are being retrenched from their working places while such established companies are closing their operations.
The labour leader said that the city streets are bustling with millions of unemployed applicants roaming the streets of major cities in the country.
He appealed to the federal and state governments to prioritise workers’ salaries without further delay, especially now that schools would soon resume, stressing that delay in salary payments had caused a lot of hardship for families.
Emecheta enjoined the workers to remain calm as they continue to support the Federal Government and the state government despite the present hardship and economic challenges.
