The executive council of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), Rivers State branch, has assured that the body would work in synergy with the Rivers State Government to ensure that the menace of petroleum tankers obstructing Azikiwe Road and its environs is checked.
Chairman,  IPMAN Rivers State branch,Sunny Nkpe, gave this assurance Friday in an interview with The Tide.
Describing the situation as disturbing, the IPMAN boss said the state government met with stakeholders two weeks ago and directed that the tankers relocate to the Iriebe trailer park to ease the high congestion of petrol tankers near the Eagle Island Tank Farms in Port Harcourt.
Nkpe said the body is waiting for the committee set up by the state government to work out the modalities for the operation of the park and stated that IPMAN would work with the government to actualize the objective.
He explained that it was not the fault of the marketers to park the trucks near the tank farms in its aim to lift products noting that it was government that gave approval for the tank farms to be established there such that there is highly concentration of tank farms at Eagle Island.
“It was not the fault of truck drivers or IPMAN. Government itself granted approval to such private tank farms to be there, so if government feels an alternative parking place be provided, it is okay. We shall work with government to achieve it. Ours is to make sure products are made available,” he said.
Reacting to the idea of President Buhari being in charge of the Petroleum Resources Ministry, the IPMAN boss said it is a welcome development saying such step underscores the importance of the sector as a criticial sector.
According to him, Nigeria being a  mono product economy, the step would ensure that all wastages would be blocked with him as the minister and Ibe Kalachukwu as the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).
“The step is a good one that can fastrack growth, stability and efficiency in the sector,” he stated.
