Fishermen Call For Increased Funding Of Sector

The Artisan Fisherment Association of Nigeria (ARFAN), Niger Delta chapter has called for increased funding of the fishing sector in order to boost fish production.
In a statement made available to our correspondent recently, the coordinator of ARFAN, Mr Samuel Ayade, who made the call in Ibeno Local Government  Area of Akwa/Ibom State said, “I want the federal government to come to the aid of fishermen, we want government to increase budgetary allocation to the fishing sector.”
He also called on the federal government to provide fishing gear amongst others to boost production.
Ayade stressed the need for the government to accord priority to the sector, adding that without fishermen there would be no fish to serve the protein needs of the populace.
According to him, artisan fishermen produce about 85 per cent of the nation’s fish needs.
He expressed optimism that if credit facilities were given to artisan fishermen, importation of fish would be a thing of the past.
“A lot of people import fish into the country, if credit facilities are given to fishermen, there will be surplus and enough fish in the country,” he said.
The ARFAN boss said that the major challenges facing the local industry were production by multinational oil companies and sea piracy on the nation’s waterways.
