Housing: Valuer Tasks RSG On Workable Strategy

An estate surveyor
and valuer, Benjamin Oti has urged the Rivers State government to develop a yearly plan to tackle the problems associated with accommodation and high cost of rent.
Oti who was speaking in an interview with The Tide in Port Harcourt, Monday, noted that the rate of housing demand in Port Harcourt and environs is increasing on yearly basis, especially for workers.
He said that the population of workers in the payroll of the state government for home ownership is quite high, adding that the means of getting there is quite slim.
According to him, access to mortgage fund, coupled with difficulties in attaining lands have hindered most low income earners, especially those in the public service from realising their goals.
Oti maintained that the way forward to this problem is for the government to develop a workable policy for housing development every year.
He said specific percentage of the budget should  be set aside for social housing scheme and that such houses should be sold to workers on mortgage where the cost should be deducted from salaries.
The valuer, who is also a member of the Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyor and Valuer, specifically urged the new administration in the state to take the issue of housing development as a priority, he advised the Governor, Chief (Barr) Ezebuwo Wike to see such step as an investment and revenue generation venture.
