Father Petitions Rivers CP Over Son’s Detention

The father of a
youngman, Mr Achakara Ogbuji arrested by the Rivers State Special Anti-Robbery Squad over suspicion of being both a kidnapper and an armed robber, has petitioned the Rivers State commissioner of police, Mr Dan Bature over the continual detention of his son.
In the petition addressed to Mr Bature, and made available to The Tide in Port Harcourt Monday, the suspect’s father, Mr Friday Ogbuji contended that he was surprised that his son was still in detention more than two weeks after his arrest.
The petition stated that the suspect was a welder who was travelling from Egbeda to Elele to purchase welding materials when he was arrested by policemen from SARS.
It stated that SARS had informed the suspect that it was acting on petition by an undisclosed person that he was a kidnapper and a robber.
According to the suspect’s father, the petition given to SARS did not disclose where, when and whom the suspect robbed or whom his son had kidnapped.
The letter urged the police to discountenance the petition as he described it as frivolous and originating from a disgruntled element who was envious of the son’s success as an artisan.
It stated that criminality was as a result of commission of a crime and not on the whims and caprices of disgruntled element.
The letter explained that the suspect was a decent law-abiding family man who had never meddled with crime.
The petition also stated that the house of the suspect had been searched but nothing incriminating was found.
He therefore called on the police commissioner to release his son in the interest of justice.
