Drogba, Zokora Shun Elephants, Focus On Clubs

Hervé Renard has unveiled his final 23-player squad for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations on Monday, and as expected, Didier Drogba and Didier Zokora were left out of the list.
The two veterans announced their international retirement in the aftermath of the FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014, missing out on the Elephants’ Group D qualifying campaign.
However, Renard admitted he approached the duo before finalizing his squad for the continental showpiece.
“I held talks with both Didier. I don’t have any problem with anyone. My aim is to build the best possible squad, so I approached some players who ruled out a Côte d’Ivoire return,” the Frenchman said on the Ivoirian Football Federation official website on Monday evening.
“But I thank them for listening to me and hearing the points I wanted to make. Drogba and Zokora want to focus on their clubs, and as they were not part of the qualifying campaign, it may make sense and we must respect it.”
Côte d’Ivoire will kick off their pre-AFCON camp in Abu Dhabi on January 5.
