Ebola Disease Rekindles Patriotic Spirit In Nigerians
The Permanent Secretary,
Federal Ministry of Health, Mr Linus Awute has said that although the importation of the dreaded Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) into the country by the American-Liberia Patrick Sawyer was bad, it brought out the spirit of patriotism among Nigerians.
Mr Awute who was fielding questions on the state of the disease in the country at the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, Monday, said the spirit of patriotism demonstrated by Nigerians cut across political and professional affiliations in the fight against the disease.
He equally noted that Nigerians adopted a better personal and environmental hygiene while health officials are now more professional as their professional attitude has been developed in the process of EVD containment.
The Permanent Secretary remarked that the legacies are supposed to be enhanced and consolidated to ensure that the country continues to play its leading role in Africa.
According to him, at a recent conference of Health Ministers of West African States, Nigeria’s Prof Onyebuchi Chukwu was asked to play a leadership role in the Ebola Virus Disease ( EVD) based on the knowledge and experience of Nigeria in the containment of the disease.
“Similarly, there is a programme we are putting together where we will train health workers from Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone in the field of Epidemology and Laboratory Science to manifest our leading role responsibility” he said.
Mr Awute explained that “Nigeria has been able to contain EVD up to a level where we can comfortably say the country is safe. We identified 19 cases, of this number only seven deaths were recorded, two in Rivers State and five in Lagos.
“Of all those that are under surveillance, only few are being awaited undergoing the 21 days – incubation period which is expiring soon, to a reasonable proportion those that are under surveillance are free. All those in isolation are free, nobody is still there as at toda,” the permanent secretary declared.

Rivers Judiciary Denies Issuing Court Order Stopping SOLAD from Swearing in RSCSC Members
The Rivers State Judiciary has denied a media report claiming that Justice Frank Onyiri of the State High Court issued an injunction order restraining the Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd), from inaugurating the newly appointed members of the Rivers State Civil Service Commission (RSCSC).
In a statement issued by the Deputy Chief Registrar in charge of litigation at the High Court, Menenen Poromon (Esq), the state Judiciary disassociated itself from the report, describing it as malicious and fabricated.
The statement emphasized that the report was a falsehood and a misrepresentation of what transpeared in the court.
Poromon clarified that no such order was issued by Justice Onyiri or any other judge of the High Court of the state and urged the public to disregard the information, as it lacked any iota of truth.
The statement however advised the public to verify any information concerning the state Judiciary directly from the office of the Chief Registrar, High Court of the State, to avoid spreading of misinformation.
