Enugu: Forum Faults Archbishop’s Comments On Zoning

Members of a political
pressure group in Enugu State, the Nsukka Zonal Awareness Forum (NZAF), have flayed the Archbishop of Enugu Ecclessiastical Province and Bishop of Enugu Diocese of the Anglican Communion, Most Rev. Dr. Emmanuel Chukwuma, over his recent comments condemning the zoning arrangement of Enugu State Chapter of the People’s Democratic Party(PDP) which has ceded the governorship position come 2015 to the people of Enugu North senatorial zone.
Other reactions condemning Bishop Chukwuma’s utterances came from the Enugu State chairman of PDP, Chief Vita Abba, the National Coordinator of  NZAF, Chief James Ugwu, the chairman of the Enugu state Committee on the Actualization of the Creation of Adada state, General Godwin Ugwuoke (rtd.) as well as some well known individuals within and outside the state.
According to them, the people of Enugu North (Nsukka  Senatorial Zone)  have not had a shot at the plum position for about two decades now and dismissed his posturing as hypocritical since he has been a living witness of how it has worked in the state in past decades.
They said, “the cleric is believed to be a close ally of Deputy Senate President, Chief Ike Ekweremadu, who has been accused severally of covertly working against the realization of that PDP zoning formula by nursing a discreet governorship ambition even as he is from the same zone with Governor Sullivan Chime who will serve out his second term in office in 2015”.
Their words: “Bishop Chukwuma who briefed newsmen in Enugu last week had called for the abandonment of the zoning arrangement which he said was undemocratic, a statement he made about three weeks after he conferred the Award of Excellence on Senator  Ekweremadu who has been at loggerheads with governor Chime on that issue of zoning as well as who occupies their Enugu West senatorial seat in 2015”.
“In a show of outrage against the Bishop, torrent of reactions came from groups and political stakeholders who described the cleric’s alleged partisan posture as unfortunate, uncalled for and lacking in merit as it is mere meddlesomeness while others believed it is a sing-song coming from the prodding of a political pay master”.
According to the group, “it is not the first time the Clergy man has worked to frustrate the efforts of the administration of Governor Chime but this time around, his opinion would continue to be seen as dangerous to the polity by all good sons and daughters of Enugu State”.
“General  Ugwoke corroborated the hate theory of NZAF when he said it is surprising and disappointing that such a comment would come from such a highly-placed religious personality and leader who has been in Enugu state all these decades and has seen how the zoning arrangement has worked”.
