Association Lauds FG For Training Artisanal, Small Scale Miners
The Secretary of Sokoto
State Women Miners Association, Hajiya Zainab Mohammed has commended the Federal Government for training artisanal and small scale miners through its extension service programme.
Mohammed told newsmen in Abuja that the training had assisted them to know the safety measures to use during mining operations.
She said that the beneficiaries had learnt a lot about hazard and non-hazard minerals, controlling hazards, protecting the host community and workers (operators).
Mohammed said that the beneficiaries had also been exposed to dust control strategies, protection of the environment, solutions to hazards as well as how to conduct regular inspections.
She said that training was important to all the miners as it enabled the participants to know everything about the mine sites and how to discover a mineral deposit and mineral evaluation.
The secretary said that the beneficiaries were trained on different methods of sampling of minerals using chemical, technological, channel, drill, placer and reserve estimation.
She thanked the government for distributing safety helmet, hand gloves, garment, nose mask, ear muff, safety boot and rain boot to protect miners during mining operations.
Mohammed called on the Federal Government to construct accessible roads to all mining sites, adding that it had been a major challenge in mining sites.
She also urged the Federal Government to include the host communities in training programme to enable them know more about mining and its hazards.
The secretary said members of the association mined mainly Gypsum and limestone with the Cement Company of Northern Nigeria as their major customer.
Mohammed appealed to the Federal Government to always give preference to local miners in the issuance of mineral titles.
She, however, identified paucity of funds as major challenge of the sector and urged government to support the development of mining sector in the country.
