Two In Custody Over Rape Of 11Year-Old

A Yaba Magistrates’
Court in Lagos last Thursday, remanded two men, Sesan Oluwole and Emmanuel Lakehinde, over the alleged rape of an 11-year-old girl.
Oluwole, 25, and Lakehinde 27, who reside at No. 11 Humani St., Bajulaye, Shomolu, and No. 22, Sanusi Street, Somolu, Lagos, respectively, are standing trial on a two-count charge of conspiracy and child rape.
Counsel to the accused persons, Emmanuel Bassey, informed the court that he had filed a bail application on behalf of his clients.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Yewande Aje-Afunwa, however, denied the bail application and ordered that they be remanded in prison custody, pending advice from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
The police prosecutor, ASP Felix Ifijen, told the court that the accused persons committed the offence on December 12, 2013.
Ifijen said that the accused who worked as printers at the minor’s residence at No. 22, Sanusi Street, Shomolu, took turns to rape the girl when she went to take an evening shower behind the house.
“Lakehinde and Oluwole conspired on December. 12 and had sexual intercourse with the 11-year-old, in the bathroom behind their home.
“They also threatened to kill her if she told anyone about it,’’ the prosecutor said.
Ifijen said that the matter was reported to the police by the minor’s step-father who had travelled for a few days but returned on December 18 to find that his daughter was ill.
He said that after a thorough investigation, the minor confessed to being raped by the accused persons, after which they were arrested.
Lakehinde and Oluwole, however, denied the charges.
The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Sections 409 and 137 of the Criminal Code Laws of Lagos State, 2011.
The Tide reports that if found guilty, the accused persons could face life imprisonment.
