Youth Leaders Administrative Council (NDYCA) has called on governments and multinational companies operating in the area to be proactive in addressing the environmental challenges in the region.
The National President of NDYCA, Mr Marvin Yobana, made the call when he addressed newsmen on national issues in Abuja last Saturday.
Yobana said environmental crisis such as oil spillage portend danger to the lives of the people of the area and their economic activities.
He said crimes and social vices among youths could be reduced if the authorities could create more employment opportunities for them.
He said Niger Delta youths were in support of President Goodluck Jonathan’s Transformation Agenda, and called on every Nigerian to support the agenda.
Yobana commended Jonathan for appointing Chief Bassey Dan Abia, as the Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).
He said being a seasoned technocrat, they were confident that he would bring his experience to bear in using the commission to improve on the welfare of the people of Niger Delta.
He commended the president on his various youths empowerment programmes, saying that those policies had created a considerable number of jobs for young people.
“The youth of Niger Delta region unanimously commend President Goodluck Jonathan for initiating the national dialogue.
“It is a welcome development, which all Nigerians have been clamouring for and we are appealing to Mr President to ensure proper representation of the youth when the dialogue opens,” he said.
