230m Fraud: Police Arrest Ex-ENSUBEB Boss

The Enugu State
Police Command has arrested  the former Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board, Mrs Ethel Nebo-Ezeabasili, for alleged fraud of N230,245,000.
A statement from the police spokesperson, Mr Ebere Amaraizu, in Enugu last Tuesday said that Nebo-Ezeabasili and others at large allegedly defrauded the board of the amount between September and October 2012.
According to the statement, the fraud involved an illegal award of a contract without the consent of the board.
It alleged that the former chairman did not follow the normal procedure of awarding contracts.
“The board members whose duty was to recommend procurement and contracts were not informed about the contract,’’ the statement said.
She was also accused of using more than two company names to secure the contract without bidding adding that the contractors involved could not be traced.
“The fact that the contractors involved could not be traced led to the suspicion that the contract was handled by the chairman personally,’’ it said.
The statement said that based on the foregoing, a written complaint was made against the former chairman for her alleged fraudulent activities to be investigated.
It said the command had arrested some of the suspects in connection with the alleged crime while Nebo-Ezeabasili had been released on bail.
