The Lagos State Commissioner for Urban and Physical Planning, Mr. Toyin Ayinde, has advised construction professionals to be innovative and network to advance the profession.
Ayinde gave this advice in Lagos at the maiden edition of the International Trade Show & Expo tagged CONSRAD 2012.
According to him, the construction industry in Nigeria needs to emphasise specialisation and inter-professional communication.
“Team work is what will make construction professionals achieve a lot for this nation.
“The world has gone beyond solo efforts and advancement can be sustained with professionals networking with each other,” he said.
Ayinde said the trend whereby young construction professionals would not aspire to belong to their professional groups was worrisome.
He said that the newly initiated could not grow without fraternising with their more senior colleagues.
The commissioner commended the trade show and expo, saying that CONSTRAD 2012 was an indication of how experience could develop professional bodies and their members.
Mr. Fred Coker, President of Association of Consulting Architects of Nigeria, said that there was need to encourage youths to attend the trade show and expo.
“Making youths to come around to see what is being exhibited will help them to form a design consciousness,” he said.
Mr. Kunle Awobode, the chairman, Building Collapse Preventive Guild, said that CONTRAD 2012 would expose people to quality building materials.
According to him, more exhibitions are necessary to expose dealers in substandard building materials and reduce the incidence of building collapse in the country.
“To get good quality building materials is always the nightmare of every construction professionals which I believe this expo will help close the gap,” he said.
