Rotary Embarks On Community Sanitation
In a move to prevent possible out-break of diseases the
Rotary Club of Port Harcourt GRA, Distrit 9140 Nigeria, has embarked on a
sanitation exercise at Oroworukwo Community Market.
Speaking to newsmen during the sanitation exercise last
Saturday at Oroworukwo Market in Port Harcourt Local Government Area of Rivers
State, the President, Rotarian Virgina Major, said the exercise is part of the
community service outreach programme of the club, whereby people in public
places are sensitised on the need to clean their environment to prevent
possible outbreak of diseases.
The president noted that the sanitation exercise is a
demonstration of the importance Rotary Club (GRA) attaches to the health of the
people and in line with the disease prevention and treatment programme of the
club.
According to her, exercise is aimed at educating the traders
on the need to sanitise their environment, saying that malaria is preventable
if only you can cover your food, wash hands before touching food, avoid keeping
stagnant water around the surrounding and general clean up exercise.”
Also speaking Director, Community Services for 2012/2013,
Rotarian Arthur Kalabor, said Rotary is all about health, infant mortality and
conflict resolution, noting that the exercise has afforded them the opportunity
to sensitise the traders on the need to sanitise their environment and evacuate
the refuse.
Meanwhile, the club distributed treated mosquito nets,
refuse receptacles and bin liners to the traders to boost the sanitary
condition of the market, while protecting them from mosquito bites.
The Oroworukwo Market Women Leader, Charity Wami, commended
the club for its gesture and assured to maintain the improved sanitary
condition of the market.
