Minister Explains PENCON’s Compliance
The Military Pensions Board, has completed the transfer of retirees from PENCOM to the military pension system, Mrs Olusola Obada, the Minister of State for Defence, has said.
Obada said this on the occasion of the 20th Anniversary and Graduation of Course 20 participants of the National Defence College on Friday in Abuja.
She added that “all the integrated pensioners’’ had been paid their entitlements up to date.
Obada said the ministry was working assiduously to ensure that the living standard of members of the armed forces was improved.
“I cannot over-emphasise the premium the ministry, and indeed the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan, place on training and welfare of members of the armed forces.
“This government has been vigorous in the pursuit of positive attitudinal changes in the members of the armed forces.’’
Obada said the FG had facilitated series of training for the military to keep pace with the drive towards professionalism.
She said the ministry had embarked on the construction and refurbishing of 18 barracks across the country and congratulated the course participants for their hard work in the 46 weeks they stayed in the college.
“Your course is about thinking strategically and critically; providing strategic vision and effective leadership; putting the nation first and at the same time being a responsible member of the community.’’
Our correspondent reports that 130 participants graduated from the course, which began on Sept. 12, 2011.
A breakdown of the figure showed that 40 came from the Army, 36 from the Navy, 35 from the Air Force, two from the police, two from the SSS and one from the National Intelligence Agency.
Similarly, one each came from the civil defence corps, the FRSC, National Defence College, National Space Research and Development Agency and 10 international participants.
The Distinguished Alumnus Award of the College was conferred on Col. Gogue Abudulaye, Chief of Air Staff of Benin Republic and Brig.-Gen. Gelbert Diendere, National Security Adviser of Burkina-Faso.
The Chief of Defence Staff of Sierra-Leone, Maj.-Gen. Samuel Williams, also received the award.
Participants who distinguished themselves were given awards and prizes.
Abudulaye, who spoke on behalf of his colleagues,thanked the college for honouring them with “such prestigious awards’’.
