Legal Aid Council Disposes 216 Cases
The Legal Aid Council in Rivers State says it has disposed off 216 out of 368 cases received or granted between January and May, 2012.
A break-down of the figure shows that 152 cases are pending while 216 were completed during the period.
Disclosing this while briefing journalits in her office at the Court Complex in Port Harcourt, the Senior Legal Aid Officer, Ms Anita Nwaeze, who spoke on behalf of the co-ordinator, Mrs Francis Blaylane, stated that the 368 cases included criminal and civil cases.
Enumerating other achievements of the body, Ms Nwaeze said in partnership with the Ministry of Justice, a programme to create awareness on Police Duty Solicitors Scheme was organised with participants drawn from the justice sector including the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice and representatives of the Director-General of Legal Aid Council of Nigeria from Abuja and the Nigeria Police.
She disclosed that the state Co-ordinator has also been on regular radio awareness programme to educate the public on the functions of the Legal Aid Council, adding that they have succeeded in handling criminal cases on armed robbery, murder, stealing and rape.
The Legal Aid Officer noted that the organisation successfully resolved many landlord and tenant matters, accident cases as well as mediating between employer and employee disputes.
Ms Nwaeze listed some of the problems militated against the proper functioning of the organisation to include lack of functional vehicle, office space and finance, and appealed to the state Governor, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice and the Director-General of Legal Aid Council of Nigeria to come to their aid.
She regretted that the council, with over seven lawyers cannot boast of one vehicle to take officers to work at long distance, adding that in some cases, personal money was spent to ensure service delivery to the public.
The Legal Aid Officer explained that they have been rendering pro-bono (Free Legal Services) to individuals and groups who have matters but are financially ill-equipped to get the services of lawyers in both criminal and civil matters.

Rivers Judiciary Denies Issuing Court Order Stopping SOLAD from Swearing in RSCSC Members
The Rivers State Judiciary has denied a media report claiming that Justice Frank Onyiri of the State High Court issued an injunction order restraining the Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd), from inaugurating the newly appointed members of the Rivers State Civil Service Commission (RSCSC).
In a statement issued by the Deputy Chief Registrar in charge of litigation at the High Court, Menenen Poromon (Esq), the state Judiciary disassociated itself from the report, describing it as malicious and fabricated.
The statement emphasized that the report was a falsehood and a misrepresentation of what transpeared in the court.
Poromon clarified that no such order was issued by Justice Onyiri or any other judge of the High Court of the state and urged the public to disregard the information, as it lacked any iota of truth.
The statement however advised the public to verify any information concerning the state Judiciary directly from the office of the Chief Registrar, High Court of the State, to avoid spreading of misinformation.
