A non-governmental Organisation (NGO) in Nigeria, the Social Housing Advocacy Group (SHAG) has declared its support for sustained investment in mass housing in the country.
The group has also affirmed that housing sector contributes between 30 and 70 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product (GPD) in a developed economy.
SHAG in a declaration it made recently through its chairman, Architect Nya-Etok Ezekiel, posited that a sustained investment in mass housing will facilitate the realisation of vision 20:2020 objectives.
The declaration which was signed by the chairman and made available to The Tide also advocates the declaration of the first day in November every year, as the National Social Housing Awareness Day for awareness of the scheme.
As part of efforts to boost housing stock in the country, the group posited that it will champion the realisation of strategic National objective of delivery one million housing units annually where the low or no income groups will be specific targets.
They also urge the Federal government not to merge the ministry of Housing with others to ensure that the ministry is stable to be able to carry out and fulfill its mandate.
SHAG however, thanked the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN), ASO Saving, Plc and Federal Housing Authority (FHA) for their efforts so far in housing, but redefined social housing as not just for the poor and less privileged but for non income, low and medium income.
