The Vice-Chairman, Association of Proprietors of Football Academy of Nigeria (APFAN), Oluwole Santana, has announced plans to hold an U-13 and U-15 football competition during the school summer vacation .
Santana told newsmen yesterday that the competition was aimed at discovering budding talents and to prevent the students from idleness.
“The students would go on vacation by the end of July, so we want to keep them busy and also to discover talents that would become future national players,” he said.
The APFAN officer said that the association was trying to develop football at the grassroots.
“Football is losing its value in the country. We have the talents but there is lack of continuation and those discovered are not usually nurtured,” he said.
Santana advised parents and guardians to allow their children and wards to participate in the championship in order for their potentials to be discovered early.
He also solicited the support of corporate bodies in organizing the competition as well as to aid football development at the grassroots.
Santana further said: “We are soliciting for the support of corporate bodies because the association cannot do it alone. We can discover talents but how do we keep nurturing them?”
The APFAN chieftain, who did not give a specific date and venue for the competition, said the plan of the association was to organise the competition annually.
