PENGASSAN Set For Strike Against Belbop/Conoil
The Petroleum and National Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) is set to embark on a nationwide strike in Belbop/Conoil if nothing positive happens at the expiration of its 14-day ultimatum today.
In a circular issued by the General Secretary of PENGASSAN, Mr Bayo Olowoshile, and made available to newsmen, PENGASSAN reminded workers of the company of the importance of embarking on the industrial action.
The circular, which directed the workers to get ready for the nationwide industrial action also reminded them of an earlier circular issued on January 26, 2011 following a meeting of the Central Working Committee (CWC), in which the decision was taken.
While noting that the action is in reaction to alleged refusal by the management of the company to honour an agreement reached with workers since 2008, the circular also reminded the workers of the agreement reached by PENGASSAN and its junior staff counterpart, National Union of Petroleum and National Gas Workers (NUPENG).
According to the circular, the two unions and the management of the company had on October 8, 2008 agreed, among other things, that “management is committee to pay three percent on all wage re- opener items in line with the clause of he subsisting Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), effective October 1, 2006.”
The agreement also required that “manage-ment commences to implement the Employees Home Ownership Grant (EHOG), but on pro-rata basis in compliance with the subsisting CBA.”
It continued that “management commences to pay all outstanding leave allowances, including buying back the unspent leave of the employees and that separation ex-gratia shall be paid as follows, senior staff, N1.5 million and junior staff, N1 million.
PENGASSAN expressed displeasure over the refusal of the management to honour the agreement, hence the threat to shut down operations in the company today, if the management still remains in different.
