The Katsina State Government has earmarked N4 billion for the procurement of fertiliser for this year’s cropping season.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Alhaji Maikata Ango, made the disclosure in Katsina while defending the ministry’s 2011 budget before the Katsina State House of Assembly Committee on Appropriation.
He said that the money would be used to purchase the required fertiliser for farmers in the state.
Ango said that the commodity would be sold to farmers at subsidised rates as had been the case since the past three years of the present administration.
He also disclosed that a total of N700 million was also earmarked for the irrigation sector, including construction and rehabilitation of dams, purchase of water pumps among others.
According to him, a total of 3,450 hectares of land will be developed at the Jibia Irrigation Site during the year.
The permanent secretary also revealed that N140.5 million was set aside for capital projects in the Forestry Sector.
Ango further stated that substantial amount of money would be spent on the veterinary sector and the improvement of livestock production in the state.
The Chairman, Appropriation Committee of the House of Assembly, Alhaji Sirajo Doro, said the committee would scrutinise all provisions and make adjustment where necessary.
