RSUST ASUU Plans Secretariat Complex

The newly elected exco of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Rivers State University of Science and Technology chapter has hinted of its plans to construct a secretariat building before the expiration of its tenure.

Chairman of the body, Dr. Felix Igwe made the disclosure in a chat with pressmen shortly after the elections of the union held recently in Port Harcourt.

Dr. Igwe said the union do not have a functional secretariat as it has been operating in the office of the various chairmen from different faculties of the school.

The new RSUST ASUU boss who frowned at such scenario observed that a functional secretariat would enhance the status and activities of the union which according to him have grown over the years.

He therefore appealed to members to provide the necessary support to the new exco to achieve the dream of moving the body forward considering the task ahead.

The university don also appealed to the school senators who are members of the union to protect the interest of the union at the school’s top decision making body.

Pledging the support of his exco to the university’s management, Dr. Igwe pointed out that the body would not condone any obnoxious policy that would stifle ASUU interest.

Earlier in his remarks, former ASUU chairman Mrs. Emylia Jaja expressed the hope government would implement the salary scale for lecturers.

Mrs. Jaja stated that during her two-term tenure, the chapter was able to galvanise members to pursue the vision of the union despite the challenges they encountered.

Currently she stated that the chapter has established a cooperative body to take care of the welfare of members and commended members for the support they gave her and her team in moving the chapter forward.

In her words, “RSUST ASUU within the federation is among one of the most vibrant chapters. We have remained resolute and I thank God that during our trials nobody gave up”.

Mrs. Jaja charged the new exco to sustain the tempo in protecting the welfare of university teachers. She also prayed God to give the Dr. Igwe-led exco the wisdom to pilot the affairs of the body.
