A Mushin Grade A Customary Court in Lagos, yesterday gave a landlady a three-month ultimatum to repair her building or face sanctions.
The court has threatened to seal off the storey building located at 2, Kajola Str., Mushin, over its poor sanitary condition.
The President of the court, Dr Abayomi Ipaye, warned the landlady, Mrs Abibat Ayilara, to comply with the state’s environmental sanitation laws on or before Sept. 17, or face the music.
“This court will not hesitate to evoke Sections 7 and 8 of the Public Health Laws of Lagos State,’’ he said.
The Mushin Local Government had filed a suit against the landlady on May 20, asking the court to compel her to repair the house which it said constituted environmental nuisance.
According to the council’s Sanitation Officer, Mr Raji Razak, the facilities in the house, including the sewage, were in deplorable condition.
The landlady, however, pleaded guilty to the offence of constituting environmental nuisance and urged the court to grant her more time to eject the tenants before carrying out the repairs.
The caretaker of the house, Mr Adeola Abiodun, told the court that he had wanted to repair the house since 2007, but that the tenants refused to move out.
