Information making the rounds in the music industry has it that Gospel Musicians in Nigeria have been meeting secretly to form an Association of their own. The new union according to them is to bring their practitioners together and forge a common front. But, while the foundation is just being laid, a huge fight is already brewing among the members which has to do with who becomes the head of the body when eventually it is inaugurated.
According to our source, right now the groundswell of support is tilting in favour of Isoko born ‘Welu Welu’ crooner Sammy Okposo whom several members say has the charisma and the name to build a foundation for the emerging association. It was further gathered that already, there is intense opposition coming from some members who believe the job should not be given to Sammy
This group is led by another Niger Delta gospel artiste, Asu Ekiye who argues that Sammy despite his personality and achievements cannot lead a gospel group because he is not born again. In a recent interview with the press, Asu Ekiye declared: “I cannot be led by Sammy Okposo, Yes!, He cannot lead me. I cannot be a part of anything led by Sammy Okposo. Gospel music is not just an art form, it is actually a life style. And in fact, the life style validates the music”.
