UNIPORT Adopts RSG’s Urban Renewal Policy … Demolishes Illegal Structures


In what looks like the  adoption of the Urban Renewal Policy of Governor Chibuike Amaechi of Rivers State, the authorities of University of Port Harcourt, Choba have commenced the demolition of illegal structures in the three campuses of the institution.

Also, the housing unit of the university has been directed to start documentation of occupants of Service Quarters attached to official residential accommodation in the university.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Don Baridam who ordered the exercise at an emergency meeting of the congregation pointed out that the demolition and demographic details would assist the university provide adequate security on campuses and restore the beauty of the institution.

Professor Baridam expressed dismay over the attitude of some staff who rent out part of their official accommodation warning that such staff stands the risk of ejection from the university.  

He further disclosed that plans are in top gear to extend lighting to all parts of the university while over grown flowers and trees that aid activities of criminals in residential areas would be cut down to enable security operatives have unhindered access and view of the areas.

The Weekend Tide understood that activities of criminals in and around the campuses in recent times which led to the gruesome murder of the chief security officer (CSO) of the university, Mr Weli Amadi necessitated re-evaluation of security arrangements in the university Culminating  in the demolition exercise.
